   <strong style="font-size&#58;12pt;"> </strong></p><p>This page highlights businesses in ​Kane County that provide customers with opportunities to&#160;​reuse consumer packaging or to bring their own packaging to help reduce use of single-use items.<br></p><h2>​Groceries<br></h2><p>
   <a href="https&#58;//chipkomarket.com/">Chipko Market</a>, Kane County's first &quot;bring your own container&quot; grocery store opened at 902 S. Randall Road in St. Charles in November of 2025. We featured Chipko Market in Kane County Connects in 
   <a href="https&#58;//kanecountyconnects.com/article/KaneCounty-StCharles-ChipkoMarket">April of 2026</a>. The store is thoughtfully&#160;designed around the ability for customers to weigh their reused packaging so that they only pay for the product they buy. In addition to reducing packaging, this model also gives customers the ability to&#160;try out new products without committing to a full-size container.  <a href="https&#58;//drive.google.com/file/d/1jkHd3x8ZnBPSTV7Jv2EXjriG2LxJwmeT/view?fbclid=IwY2xjawRY0TdleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF1NVN2VVk1R00zZ2I3eGN2c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhRMY7Uv98UTO0cYXTBX9ELo06tb83aSiF8SHXBWsAZsLQiEXQy61tQkDyZT_aem_tvUgqBEuZIc68oFMm1aqig">​Chipko's product list (March 2026) is available 
  here</a>.&#160;​<br></p><p>Other area groceries including Fresh Thyme (Geneva), Fresh Market (Geneva) and Whole Foods (St. Charles) may have bulk bins/self-vend options for certain products, but it is unclear if they are set up to allow customers to tare the scale with&#160;their clean reused containers. Ask for help at customer service!<br></p><p>
   <a href="https&#58;//www.oberweis.com/">Oberweis Dairy</a>,&#160;​​​headquartered in North Aurora, had long offered milk delivery and retail sales in reusable, returnable glass containers with a deposit.&#160;<br></p><h2>Restaurants</h2><p>If you are&#160;going out to eat and suspect you may not finish your meal, plan ahead and bring your own&#160;clean container with a tight seal&#160;to store your leftovers. It is perfectly safe and legal to do this.<br></p><p>As of 2023, it is also&#160;legal for restaurant staff to put prepared to-go&#160;foods into customer-provided containers&#160;as long as the containers are clean, suitable for the type of food being vended,&#160;in good condition, have a tight seal, and as long as health guidelines are followed.&#160;However, filling customer-provided containers&#160;is not required by law, and is up to each restaurant whether they will allow this practice. If preventing packaging waste from eating out is something you&#160;​care a lot about, reach out to the manager of your favorite spot and ask if they'll consider using&#160;customer-provided to-go containers.&#160;</p><p>See

<h2 id="NextEvent">​​Next Event Details<br></h2><h3>Geneva Park District Earth Day Celebration, April 18, Peck Farm Park (4038 Kaneville Rd.)<br></h3><p>The official hours of&#160;​Geneva Park District's Earth Day Celebration&#160;are 11am - 1pm (<a href="https&#58;//www.genevaparks.org/special-events/earth-day-celebration/">see Park District's event page​</a>). However, eWorks and Kane County Recycling Staff will be on site starting at 9 am to collect electronics, clothing and textiles, books and paper and household batteries. Please note that all other services and activities for the Celebration, including document shredding, bike donation, Flat Can Recycling, food vendors, family activities, etc. are coordinated through Geneva Park District and <span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">will not start until 11am.&#160;</span><br></p><p><strong style="text-decoration&#58;underline;"></strong><span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;"></span>​The <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx#Fees">standard program fee ​</a>of $25-$35 will be charged for monitors and TVs at this event.       <description><![CDATA[<div><b>Page Content:</b> <h1>Needles &amp; Sharps​</h1><p>
   <strong>PLEASE NEVER PL​ACE LOOSE NEEDLES AND SYRINGES IN&#160;TRASH OR RECYCLING!</strong><br></p><p>Residential sharps (ie. needles, syringes, lancets) generated from households in Illinois&#160;should be disposed of following the guidance below.&#160;​Improper storage and&#160;disposal&#160;of home-generated medical waste&#160;​poses a potential health hazard to anyone who handles them including family members, neighbors and sanitation workers. Although rare, serious&#160;diseases including&#160;Hepatitis B &amp; C and HIV can result from accidental contact with used sharps. The Illinois EPA, Potentially Infectious Medical Waste (PIMW) Section encourages the following safer disposal methods.​</p><p>
   <a href="https&#58;//epa.illinois.gov/topics/waste-management/waste-disposal/medication-disposal/sharps.html">IEPA's fact​ sheet​</a> on sharps disposal guidelines provides a hierarchy of disposal methods. The first choice should be to drop them off at a designated collection site. If that isn't available or feasible, the second choice should be to use a mail-in program. If that isn't available or feasible, the third and final choice should be to dispose (carefully prepared) sharps in household trash.​<br><br></p><h2>Safe Packaging of Sharps​<br></h2>Regardless of how sharps are to be disposed of,&#160;<strong>always</strong>​<strong>​ follow the following safe packaging guidelines&#58;</strong>​ 
<ol style="margin-bottom&#58;15px;"><li>Use a puncture-proof sharps container which can be purchased at a&#160;pharmacy. Mail in programs will provide a suitable container. Alternatively, hard plastic household containers, which should be unbreakable and puncture resistant, may be reused to contain sharps. We recommend a liquid laundry detergent bottle. Milk jugs, coffee cans and class containers&#160;are not suitable.<br></li><li>Sharps should be placed in the sharps container immediately after use.</li><li>Put sharps in point-first.</li><li>Store sharps in closed container with the cap or lid in place when not in use and until disposal.</li><li>Containers more than half-full should be disposed of. Do not cram them full.</li><li><p> Clearly​ label container 
         <strong>“SHARPS, DO NOT RECYCLE” </strong>with a permanent marker.<br></p></li><li>When the container is half full, tape lid on securely with duct tape.<br></li></ol><div>

   <strong>Other Safety Tips</strong>​</p><ul><li> Do not try to bend or recap needles with their covers as this can lead to an injury.</li><li> You can save time and money by purchasing&#160;an inexpensive needle clipping device from pharmacies or online to safely clip, catch, and contain needles. The rest of the&#160;syringe can be put in&#160;the trash. These containers can store up to a two-year supply of needles.</li><li>Do not use scissors to clip off needles, as the flying needle could hurt someone or become lost.</li><li> Plan your sharps disposal when traveling, and bring used sharps home if no other safe disposal options exist.</li><li> Keep containers away from children and animals.</li></ul>​ </div>

</p><p>Hard-to-Recycle items are things that can be recycled but generally cannot be put in curbside recycling bins. Some of these items pose hazards to sanitation workers, like 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/hhw.aspx">household hazardous w​​astes</a>. Others, like 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/paint.aspx">latex paint</a>, require special handling and processing to be recycled. Some materials, like polystyrene foam and plastic bags, aren't particularly dangerous but just aren't compatible with recycling facility processes. All told, these are the items we get lots and lots of phone calls about. Unfortunately, some really common household items really can't be recycled - at least not locally - and we have listed those too. </p><p>Scroll or use the alphabet links below to jump to specific entries.​</p><p>

   <strong>​</strong><strong>Aerosol​ Products</strong><strong>&#58; </strong>​See our page on 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Aerosols.aspx">Aerosol Recycling</a>. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Empty and depressurized aerosol cans that contained non-hazardous products like food or shaving cream can be put in curbside recycling bins. To depressurize the can, keep holding the trigger down, even after all product is dispensed, until all propellant is released and no more hissing sound is heard. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Additionally, Kane County works with 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.flatcanrecycling.com/">Flat Can Recycling</a> to recycle almost all aerosol cans, whether full, partially full, or empty, at our Fabyan Parkway 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Recycling Center</a> location. ​Flat Can also has 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.flatcanrecycling.com/recycling-drop-off-locations/" target="_blank">drop-off locations</a> throughout the Chicago area, including the Ace Hardware in Geneva at 617 W State Street at its warehouse location at 732 Hicks Drive, Elburn, 60119. There is a $1 per can cost to recycle through Flat Can to cover disassembly and transport.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Aerosol cans of spray paint, cleaners, and other home chemicals are often accepted through household hazardous waste programs. See our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/hhw.aspx">HHW page.</a>​​​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Air Conditioners&#58; </strong>​Portable air conditioning units (window or in-room units) in good working condition are accepted by Habitat for Humanity ReStores in Aurora and Elgin. See our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/buildingMaterialReuse.aspx">Building Material Reuse page</a> for addresses.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">AC unit are difficult to recycle until the refrigerant they contain is recovered, as required by law. Recovery can be performed by any certified HVAC professional. You can take a decommissioned​ A/C unit to a 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#scrapMetal">metal recycler</a>, but they will likely ask to see certification that the refrigerant chemical was removed. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <a href="https&#58;//www.elginrecycling.com/services/fridge--freezer-recycling/">Elgin Recycling</a> accepts AC units​ for a $40 per item refrigerant reclamation fee. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>American Flags&#58; </strong>​The United States Flag Code, adopted in 1942, states that &quot;The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.​&quot; However, in 1942 most flags were made from cotton or wool. Today, many flags are made from nylon or​ polyester, which release toxic fumes when burned. Due to these health concerns, it is generally not recommended for residents to burn flags made of synthetic material at home.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">The following locations have drop boxes where flags can be taken for proper disposal&#58;</p><ul style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"><li>Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, Building A, 1st floor, through the door to the left of the elevator; 630-208-3841</li><li>Ace Hardware, multiple locations - we did a non-comprehensive survey of Ace Hardware locations in Kane County in 2023, and all seem to have flag boxes. You may wish to call ahead to your local store to confirm. </li><li>VFW and American Legion Posts - call your local branch to confirm acceptance and hours.</li><li>Elgin Township, 729 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin, secure outdoor drop-box; 847-741-2045​.​</li></ul><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Ammunition and Gunpowder&#58;</strong> Riverside Sports in Geneva accepts unwanted ammunition and gunpowder for recycling. The store is located at 26 N. Bennett St. (Route 25), Geneva. Call 630-232-7047 or 630-244-1702 for hours or an appointment to drop off.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">​You can also call your local police department on their 
   <span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">non-emergency line to see if they accept unwanted or defective ammo. 
      <a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#scrapMetal">Scrap metal recyclers</a> may accept spent and cleaned brass shells for recycling.</span></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Appliances, small&#58;</strong> Small household electronic appliances like vacuums, toasters, blenders, hair dryers, coffee makers, and microwaves that are clean and in good working order can be donated to thrift stores. Items for recycling can be brought to 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recycling Centers</a>. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Appliances, large&#58;</strong> Household appliances that are clean and in good working order with all parts are accepted for donation at Habitat for Humanity ReStores in Aurora and Elgin. See our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/buildingMaterialReuse.aspx">Building Material Reuse page</a> for addresses.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Large household appliances, sometimes called white goods, 
   <span style="text-decoration&#58;underline;">that do not contain refrigerant (washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, water heaters, etc.) are accepted at Kane County's 
      <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Fabyan Parkway Recycling Center location</a> only (see Freezers and Refrigerators below for these items). 
      <a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#scrapMetal">Scrap metal recyclers</a> will also often accept these items.</span></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Municipal waste haulers generally accept and collect white goods, but contracts vary considerably regarding when/how often these items are accepted and how much is charged.    <strong>Art &amp; Craft Supplies&#58; </strong>
   <strong>New in June 2023</strong>​<strong> - we accept dry (non-liquid, gel or clay) art supplies at our

   <strong>Bakeware (metal, coated &amp; uncoated)&#58; </strong>​Do not put in curbside cart. Reusable items can be donated to a thrift store. Unusable items​​ ​can be recycled at 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recyc​ling Centers​</a> (Fabyan Parkway location) or at a 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#scrapMetal">scrap metal recycler</a>.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Ballasts (from fluorescent bulb fixtures)&#58; </strong>Ballasts from residential light fixtures are accepted through 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/hhw.aspx">household hazardous waste programs</a>. Elgin Recycling also 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.elginrecycling.com/recyclepak/recyclepak-ballast/">sells kits for ballast disposal​</a>. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Batteries (household)&#58; </strong> Please see our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/batteries.aspx">Batteries</a> page, which describes various battery chemistries (which impacts disposal options) and has an up-to-date map of drop-off locations in the County. Kane County Recycling Centers do not accept loose batteries.​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Batteries (wet cell/auto)&#58;</strong> Vendors of lead-acid batteries are required to accept batteries for recycling with sale of a new battery for a small recycling fee. Many 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#scrapMetal">scrap metal recyclers</a> will take car batteries and small sealed lead acid batteries for recycling at no cost. Many will actually pay you for your batteries. See the pink icons on the map on our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/batteries.aspx">Batteries</a> page. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Beauty Product Packaging&#58; </strong>​See Cosmetics Packaging below.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Bicycles&#58;</strong> There are a few programs that accept year-round bicycle donations for refurbishment and support of charitable causes. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">In the tri-cities, 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.facebook.com/Bikesforbatavia/">Bikes for Batavia​</a>, part of the Batavia Biking Comm​ission, repairs donated bicycles and supplies them to community members in need. For info, email bikesforbatavia@gmail.com. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> Kane County has formed a recent partnership with the Bicycle Ministry program&#160;at 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.hesedhouse.org/">Hesed House​</a> in Aurora for all of our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/recyclingEvents.aspx">large&#160;events</a> at 540 S. Randall Road. The Bicycle Ministry repairs donated bicycles and gives them to&#160;people in financial distress, for whom having a bike can make a huge difference in availability to work. Bikes that are not suitable for the Hesed House community are given to&#160;<a href="https&#58;//workingbikes.org/">Working Bikes</a>, a Chicago non-profit.&#160;<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.instagram.com/judsonbikes/?hl=en">The Judson Bike Shop</a> (Judson University Campus) accepts donations of bikes, bike parts and inner tubes for reuse and recycling. S​end them a message on Instagram or FB to arrange donation.<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <a href="https&#58;//mainstbicycles.com/">Main Street Bikes</a> at 39 East Main St. in Carpentersville works with the Dundee Boys &amp; Girls Club to refurbish and reuse donated bikes. Please call 847-783-0362 to schedule a donation. ​<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"><a href="https&#58;//www.recycledcycling.com/">Recycled Cycling</a>​ at 28W571 Batavia Rd. in Warrenville trades​&#160;and sells high quality kids and adult bicycles. 630-​<span style="font-size&#58;18.666px;">251-0314</span><br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <strong>Bicycle Tires and Inner Tubes&#58;</strong> Prairie Path Cycles, 160 W. Wilson St., Batavia, has a program for tires and tubes. There is a fee of $2 per tire and $0.25 per inner tube. Call 630-406-9749 for hours and info.<strong>​​</strong></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Books&#58;</strong> Books are an item where reuse is definitely better than recycling. If you have newer or classic books in good condition that you no longer want, do you have friends that would like to read them? Is there a 
   <a href="https&#58;//littlefreelibrary.org/map/">Little Free Library</a> in your ​area where you can donate books and/or swap for something you haven't read? Or perhaps your local independent book seller does buy-sell-trade? ​Does your church or community center have a reading room or library in need of more books? Many non-profit thrift stores also accept book donations. Bottom line&#58; there are lots and lots of places books can go to be enjoyed again!</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">There are times when a book truly has seen the end of its life. This includes damaged books (major rips, missing pages, extensive mark-ups/notes) and reference or text books that are too out-of-date to be useful, but not old enough to be vintage. For these, Kane County offers recycling at our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Recycling Centers​</a>. Both hard and soft-cover books are accepted. We cannot accept spiral or comb bound books unless the binding is removed or any children's books with lights or sounds.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Bottle Caps&#58; </strong>​The current best guidance is to leave screw caps on bottles being thrown in the recycling. This is true even if the cap is obviously a different material than the bottle. Recyclers have found ways to separate these materials during the recycling process. Metal caps from glass bottles can be recycled at our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Fabyan Parkway Recycling Center​</a> as scrap metal or can be collected in a metal tin and put into curbside bins. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Bubble Wrap&#58;</strong> Some shipping and packing stores will reuse clean bubble wrap with no tape on it. Call your local store for details. Bubble wrap, bubble mailers that are all-plastic (no paper outer layer), and air cushions can be recycled with 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/plasticBags.aspx">Plastic Bags and Films</a>.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Building Supplies&#58;</strong> Surplus building supplies in new or like-new condition can be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStores with locations in Aurora and Elgin. See the 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/buildingMaterialReuse.aspx">Building Material Reuse</a> page for locations &amp; contacts. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <strong>Butane Lighters&#58; </strong>Lighters can't be recycled due to the fuel residues. If you have a lighter you don't want, make sure it is completely empty of fuel (hold down trigger/igniter until all hissing stops), then throw it out in normal trash. 
   <strong></strong>​NOTE&#58; if you use a lighter frequently, you can reduce waste by buying a refillable lighter.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <strong>Campaign Signs&#58;</strong> See lawn signs, below.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">

   <strong>Carbon Monoxide (CO)</strong><strong>Detectors&#58;​</strong> Non-recyclable but can be disposed of in the regular trash. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Cardboard&#58; </strong>Flattened cardboard and chipboard boxes ​can be recycled in single-stream recycling containers. See the

   <strong>Cars (whole)&#58; </strong>Cars, even broken down ones that won't start, have a considerable amount of scrap value. 
   <strong>​&#160;</strong>You can sell your car directly to a scrapper, but keep in mind that any towing costs will likely be deducted from the scrap value. Note that Illinois law requires automotive scrap processors to be licensed with the Secretary of State's Office.<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">​If you would like to donate an unwanted car to provide local benefit, 
   <a href="https&#58;//carsofhope.org/">Cars of Hope</a> ​​repairs newer/safer donated cars and provides them to deserving families and individuals in the western Chicago suburbs. Cars that have reached the end of their lives are sold for scrap value to fund repairs on the fixable cars. Car recipients are nominated by local social service organizations including 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.lazarushouse.net/">Lazarus House</a>, 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.hesedhouse.org/">Hesed House</a> and 
   <a href="http&#58;//mutualground.org/">Mutual Ground</a> in Kane County. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Many large national and regional non-profits accept cars as scrap donations too. If there's a cause or organization that's close to your heart, do a web search or call to see if car donation is an option. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">

Please note, there is a $10 fee for recycling a car seat with Flat Can to offset the cost of disassembly and routing the many different material types for proper recycling​.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Target Corp. usually hosts a 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.target.com/c/car-seat-trade-in-event-faq/-/N-ln7zc">Car Seat Trade-In Event</a> in stores in Spring (~April) and Fall (~September) of each year.<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Car seats can legally be disposed of​ in the garbage though may require an extra sticker - check with your hauler.​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Case wrap&#58; </strong>​Clear, flexible plastic film used to wrap bulk items like soft drink cases and bulk tissues - can be recycled at store drop-offs. See our 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/plasticBags.aspx">Plastic Bags and Film</a> page. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, cassettes,&#160;and their cases​&#58;</strong> These are items where reuse is better than recycling. Large thrift stores such as Goodwill and Salvation Army accept commercially recorded CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes in their original packaging and in playable condition for resale. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">The only known drop off in the area to recycle these items is 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.avarecycling.com/il-drop-off-locations.html">AVA Recycling/​Chicago Electronics Recycling</a> in Addison (135 Laura Drive, Addison, 60101; 847-397-2900). There is a fee per pound ($1 per pound with a $5 minimum in summer 2025)​<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">There are also&#160;mail-in recycling options.​ ​The company 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.greendisk.com/">GreenDisk</a> offers a fairly affordable self-pack and self-mail option for small volumes of material (~25lbs and under) and will accept all forms of media and cases. Both 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.greendisk.com/">GreenDisk</a> and 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.terracycle.com/en-US/" title="TerraCycle Link">TerraCycle​</a> offer pre-paid collection box options for larger volumes of material​. ​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <strong>​NOTE&#58; We had to close&#160;our obsolete media program at the Fabyan Parkway recycling center in August of 2024.</strong></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Cell phones&#58;</strong> Cell phones, especially newer smart​phones in excellent or very good condition, have high refurbishment value. Most cell phone stores buy back phones or accept them as trade in for a newer model. Many non-profits and public service organizations also accept donations of cell phones. The 
   <a href="https&#58;//elginil.gov/2540/Police">Elgin Police Department</a> accepts working phones with chargers to provide low-income senior citizens a way to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. 
   <a href="https&#58;//mutualground.org/inkind-donations">Mutual Ground</a> in Aurora accepts working phones for victims of domestic violence.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Cell phones and accessories (chargers, headphones, etc.) can also be recycled at 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recycling Centers</a>​. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Chemicals, cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides&#58;</strong> Unopened surplus cleaning products can usually be donated to local non-profits. See the

   <strong>Christmas Lights&#58;</strong> Strings of lights from indoor or outdoor use are accepted at 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recycling Centers</a>. We are not able to take lit decorations like wreaths, signs, etc.​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Christmas Trees&#58;</strong> See the

   <strong>Please, don't throw butts on the ground; </strong>they contain plastic components that take a long time to decompose and often end up washed into storm drains, streams and rivers. Please dispose of filters in a designated &quot;butt stop&quot; or in the trash. Need help to quit? See

   <strong>Clothing&#58;</strong>&#160;Clean/dry clothing in any condition accepted at the

   <strong>Computers and computer equipment&#58; </strong>Accepted at

There is a fee to recycle computer monitors and televisions, which covers the cost of staffing the sites (and is the only fee allowable under state law). The fee is $25 for screens under 21&quot; measured diagonally and $35 for 21&quot; and over. The fee is irrespective of technology type (rear projection, LCD, plasma, etc.) The fee is not applied to​ screen-attached devices like tablets or laptops.<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Businesses with 15 or more unwanted computers might&#160;consider contacting either <a href="https&#58;//eworksesi.org/">eWorks</a> or <a href="https&#58;//www.pcsforpeople.org/locations/cookcounty/">PCs for People</a> to donate computers with on-site collection available.<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Confidential Document Shredding&#58;</strong> See the

   <strong>Containers (small)&#58;</strong> Many containers including cans, bottles, tubs, jugs &amp; jars made from metal, glass or plastic can be recycled in single-stream recycling totes or dumpsters. Food and beverage cartons can also be recycled. Unfortunately, there are many types of plastic containers that cannot be readily recycled. Examples include flexible pouches, cosmetic or beauty products with complex dispensers, clam-shells, trays and molded forms used to package toys and other items. See the

   <strong>Containers (large)&#58;</strong> Reuse is the best option.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (800 N. State St., Elgin) also accepts useable storage tubs. Other local non-profits and religious institutions may also accept them. If a storage tub has a crack or a small hole, can it be patched up with duct tape and returned to use? In a lot of homes, storage containers tend to live in out-of-the-way places so they don't have to look perfect&#160;to serve their purpose. Unwanted/unrepairable large plastic containers are unfortunately trash. Please do not but them in your curbside recycling cart, whole or broken up.​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Cooking Oil&#58;</strong>&#160;There are free drop-offs for used cooking oil in Naperville and West Chicago. Oil should be put in a clearly marked, sealed, clear plastic container (a milk jug or take-out soup container works well).    <strong>Dehumidifiers&#58; </strong>​Dehumidifiers are a disposal challenge due to the presence of a compressor with refrigerant chemical. The best option for residents with curbside trash and recycling service is usually to have the waste hauler collect the dehumidifier as a &quot;white good&quot; appliance. Town and/or hauler web pages usually describe the cost and process for white good collection, which varies by location.<br></p><p id="def" style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Newer, p​ortable dehumidifiers ​in good working condition may be accepted by Habitat for Humanity ReStores.    <strong>​Exercise Equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, stair climbers, rowing machines, strength training machines)​&#58; </strong>​Disposing of exercise equipment of tricky because it is so bulky. Larger items have to be taken apart to be moved and transported.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">There is a company in our area that buys and picks up ​unwanted exercise equipment - 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.cashfortreadmills.com/">Cash For Treadmills​</a>. The company specializes in equipment repair and parts trade. They are generally looking for newer, light-use machines rather than machines that are burned out from continued use. Their service area for pickup is 35 miles from Downer's Grove, which covers the Fox River Valley of Kane from Montgomery to Elgin. Some central locations, like Elburn and Campton Hills are also in the radius. If you are outside of the pick-up zone, you can still sell parts to the company and get a shipping label, but you will have to disassemble the machine yourself. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Private junk hauling companies will also come and pick up exercise equipment, but it is usually fairly expensive due to the difficulty of moving these items. Here is 
   <a href="/Recycling/Documents/2024LicensedHaulers.pdf">a list of hauling companies</a>​ licensed in Kane County. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Disassembling exercise machines is the only way to recycle components. 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recycling Centers​</a> will take the electronic and metal components from exercise machines. This includes circuit boards, display faces, power cables, aluminum or steel frames, and motors. Our centers cannot take plastic frames, tread or step belts, elliptical paddles, bike seats, etc.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Whole exercise machines and parts can legally be disposed of as trash as a last resort. Check with 
   <a href="/Recycling/Documents/ResidentialHaulersList.pdf">your hauler</a> for information about bulk item disposal.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Eyeglasses &amp; Sunglasses&#58; </strong>We&#160;accept eyeglasses at our

Additionally, the Batavia Lions Club collects eyeglasses and sunglasses for recycling at the Batavia Public Library; 630-879-1393. You can also check to see if your

For vintage or heirloom furniture, you might want to consider having items restored/repaired.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Direct sale or donation are other options for reuse, but it's important to make an honest assessment - is the item in safe and sanitary condition? If you had a friend or family member in need of furniture, would you feel good about giving it to them? The following issues generally prevent&#160;furniture from being sold or donated&#58; manufacturer recalls, rips, holes, major stains, pet damage, cigarette smoke exposure, broken or missing pieces, deep or large scratches, water or fire damage, mold, bedbugs. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Most f​urniture in good condition can either be sold or given away via various online marketplaces and &quot;buy nothing&quot; groups or can be donated to local non-profits. Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations in Elgin&#160;and Naperville accept certain furniture in good condition. See the

   <strong>Gardening plant pots, trays, tags&#58;</strong> Reuse is the best option. If you grow plants from seed, could you use any old flats or pots to start your plants? Can you write on the back of old tags to label your plants? Could you donate to a local garden club, community garden, or to a neighbor who grows plants from seed? Long-term, for avid gardeners, it is probably &quot;greenest&quot; to transition to compostable or reusable silicon flats and pots whenever possible. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">At the time of writing (summer 2023), Lowes at 955 S. Randall Road, St. Charles accepts plant pots for recycling; 630-338-4000. 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.springbluffnursery.com/">Spring Bluff Nursery​</a> (driveway off Bliss Rd, immediately north of intersection with Norris Rd. in unincorporated Sugar Grove) will​ accept their own pots back for reuse; 630-466-7278. ​ </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Generally, plastic plant pots can't be recycled in curbside bins for a couple of reasons. Many are black, very dark gray or dark green in color, and can't be &quot;seen&quot; by the sorting equipment at recycling facilities. Some are made from polystyrene, a very brittle plastic without any recycling market.  If you happen to have lighter color or clear pots that are marked with #5 (polypropylene), they can be put in curbside recycling as long as they are empty and clean. They would count as &quot;tubs&quot; - see containers above.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">If all else fails, these items should be put in the trash.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Gasoline&#58;</strong> See the 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/hhw.aspx">Household Hazardous Waste</a> page.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> 
   <strong>Gasoline containers (empty)&#58; </strong>Let the containers sit with the lids off for at least 3 days so that vapors dissipate. Place the empty, aired out containers in household trash. Do not put in curbside recycling due to contamination concerns.​</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Glass&#58;</strong> Glass containers like bottles &amp; jars can be recycled in your single-stream recycling containers. However, no other glass should be put in curbside bins. See the

   <strong>Hangers (clothes)&#58;</strong> Try offering hangers that are in good condition up for free on a neighborhood donation site (e.g., Freecycle, Facebook Buy Nothing Group, Nextdoor, etc.). The Kane County Recycling Coordinator has seen multiple exchanges of hangers in her town's Buy Nothing group!</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Kane County's 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Fabyan Parkway Recycling Center</a> can take metal wire hangers with all paper, foam, etc. removed, as will 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#scrapMetal">commercial metal scrappers</a>. We cannot take plastic or mixed-material hangers. Sometimes, if a hanger has a metal hook and plastic or wooden arms, the metal hook can be screwed or pulled off. Some dry cleaning businesses take hangers, as do many non-profit clothes closets. Check locally. If all else fails, put in the trash.

Small quantities of corrugated plastic signs (~100 or fewer) can be dropped off at Chicago Logistic Service year-round (701 Wesemann Drive, West Dundee. Drop off between 9am and 4pm at door 109 behind the building at the loading dock). Additionally, Kane County Recycling Program organizes sign recycling events following major elections.&#160;<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Lawn Mower&#58; </strong>Electric mowers (battery or plug-in) are accepted at 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recycling Centers</a>. Gas mowers are accepted at the Fabyan location only but must be drained of all gasoline, oil and other fluids. Fuel and lubricant should be disposed of as

   <strong>Pill bottles&#58; </strong>​Reuse to store beads, paperclips, or other small things. Empty pill bottles&#160;that are at least 2 inches in diameter can go in curbside recycling with lids and labels on, though you may wish to black out your personal info on prescription labels. ​Additionally, the religious charitable organization 
   <a href="https&#58;//m25m.org/pillbottles/">Matthew 25&#58; Ministries​</a> of Ohio has a mail-in program for reuse and recycling of empty, clean pill bottles. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Plastic cups&#58; </strong>Plastic cups can't currently be recycled in curbside programs. Reuse if possible. For foam cups​, see Styrofoam below, but otherwise, these are best placed in the trash.<br></p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Plastic grocery bags and plastic film&#58;</strong> Reduce as much as possible by using reusable shopping bags. If you lose the label or it didn't come with one, check the manufacturer website - you might be able to print a label for free.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;"> Additionally many big office supply stores like

   <a href="https&#58;//www.greendisk.com/">GreenDisk</a> offers a fairly affordable self-pack and self-mail option for small volumes of material (~25lbs and under). Both

Recovery can be performed by any certified HVAC professional. You can take a decommissioned​ fridge to a

   <strong>Scrap Metal&#58;</strong> Both ferrous metals (iron, steel) and non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, bronze, tin, zinc) are very recyclable and generally valuable to recycle. We accept mixed scrap metal at Kane County's 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Fabyan​ Parkway Recycling Center</a> location. The proceeds of the metal sales support the Center and our partner e-Works' non-profit mission to train and provide employment to developmentally disabled youth and adults. There are many for-profit recyclers in the area that will pay for scrap metal by weight. See the

   <strong>Shredded paper&#58;</strong> Paper that has *already been shredded* should not be placed in your curbside recycling cart. Even if it's contained in a paper bag when you put it out, it won't be contained by the time it arrives at a recycling facility where it becomes a nuisance. We 
   <em>do</em> accept shredded paper at Kane County 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Recycling Centers</a>​. It should be contained in paper bags (grocery bags and yard waste bags work well) and stapled closed. 
   <strong>We do not offer shredding services through our Recycling Centers,</strong> but do have occasional

   <strong>Televisions&#58;</strong> Check to see with

Some contracts include occasional free pick up for all CERA-covered items, including TVs/monitors. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">​All types of televisions are accepted at 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Kane County Recycling Centers</a>. There is a fee to recycle televisions and computer monitors through our program. The fee is retained by our site partner, the non-profit 
   <a href="https&#58;//eworksesi.org/">eWorks​</a>, and covers the cost of staffing the centers. The fee is $25 for screens under 21&quot; measured diagonally and $35 for 21&quot; and over. The fee is the same for all TV technology types (rear projection, LCD, plasma, etc.). Fees can be paid on site with cash or cards.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Textiles (sheets, towels, blankets, etc.)&#58;</strong>&#160;Accepted at Kane County 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">Recycling Centers</a> and 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/recyclingEvents.aspx">Events.</a> See the

   <strong>Thermostats&#58;</strong> Older thermostats (installed before 2005) likely ​contain a small amount of mercury, which is an acute environmental and human health hazard. Any contractor installing a new thermostat or conducting demolition must, 
   <a href="https&#58;//thermostat-recycle.org/program-info/recycling-by-state/illinois/">by law​</a>, remove any mercury-containing thermostat being replaced and recycle it. Homeowners in possession of an old mercury thermostat can use 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/hhw.aspx">HHW programs</a> or use the 
   <a href="https&#58;//thermostat-recycle.org/where-to-recycle/">Thermostat Recycling Corporation search feature​</a> to find a local drop-off.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Tires&#58; </strong> See the

   <strong>Toilets&#58;</strong> If under 5 years old and reusable, can be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStores. It's best to call ahead because not all locations accept toilets. See the 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/buildingMaterialReuse.aspx">Building Material Reuse</a> page for locations and contacts.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Old and broken toilets should be put out with trash. Contact your 
   <a href="/Recycling/Documents/ResidentialHaulersList.pdf">Waste &amp; Recycling Hauler</a> for cost, and please separate the bowl and cistern so that it is in two pieces for pick-up. </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">
   <strong>Toys&#58; </strong>Reuse is best! Direct sale or donation are the main options for reuse, but it's important to make an honest assessment - is the item in safe and sanitary condition? Would you feel good about giving the toy to a friend or family member's child? The following are no-no's when it comes to selling or donating used toys&#58; manufacturer recalls, broken or missing pieces, major blemishes (kids are rough on toys), cigarette smoke damage, water or fire damage.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">Depending on the item, there might be a strong online resale market via brick and mortar​ or online outlets like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Freecycle etc. For brick and mortar, there are Once Upon a Child for-profit resale stores for children's clothes and toys in Elgin (250 S. Randall Rd.) and Naperville (552 Rt. 59). </p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">The 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.beautifuluministries.org/resale-shop-new">Beautiful U Resale Shop</a> in Elburn (112 N. Main St., 630-934-5110) accepts toys. 
   <a href="https&#58;//www.aidcares.org/aid-wishlist/">Association for Individual Development</a> in Aurora, 847-931-2292; info@aidcares.org, accepts Duplo and Lego sets, as well as complete jigsaw puzzles. Chain thrift stores like GoodWill and Salvation Army also accept toys.</p><p style="padding-bottom&#58;5px;">The toy brand Mattel has a 
   <a href="https&#58;//shop.mattel.com/pages/playback">free, postage paid ​mail-in recycling program called PlayBack</a> that covers ​some of its sub-brands. <div><b>Page Content:</b> <h1>​​​Christmas Tree Recycling</h1><p style="text-align&#58;left;">​<br>Happy Holidays, and thank you for looking into environmentally friendly disposal of&#160;your Christmas tree! This page contains information on how to prepare trees&#160;and other evergreen decorations for disposal, and options for disposal including in a ​backyard brush pile​, at a local drop-offs and through curbside collection programs.&#160;​<br></p><h2>Preparing Trees for Disposal<br></h2> 
<h3> 
   Natural Trees&#58;<br></h3><p>Whether you are creating backyard habitat, dropping your tree off somewhere, or curbing it (all options described in detail&#160;below), <strong>t</strong><strong>rees must be taken out of&#160;stands with all ornaments, decorations, lights and hangers removed.&#160;</strong>Plastic, glass and metal used in decorations and hangers&#160;can contaminate mulch or compost and can also damage facility&#160;equipment. While you may want to bag your tree to keep needles contained&#160;​while it's being moved, any 
   <strong>bags or coverings must be removed </strong>before dropping off at a facility or before leaving curbside for collection. For curbside collection, <strong>l</strong><strong>arge trees (over 6' tall)&#160;should be cut into sections</strong> each weighing less than 50 pounds so that workers can safely lift&#160;them.&#160;Residents are advised to avoid buying live trees that have been covered in glitter or flocking/faux&#160;snow, as these treatments prevent them from being mulched or composted.​<span style="font-size&#58;18.666px;">​</span></p><h3> 
   Other Live Evergreen Decorations&#58;<br></h3><p>Due to the wire, plastic and foam used to shape&#160;and hang them, live&#160;evergreen decor, including wreaths, swags, garlands, porch pots and kissing balls, can't be composted at commercial facilities. Please either place these items in the trash or carefully cut greenery (free of any glitter or flocking) away from wire frames, pots, hangers,&#160;etc. and place in your 
   <a href="/Recycling/Documents/EPABackyardCompostGuide.pdf">backyard compost​</a>! All Kane County&#160;<a href="/Recycling/Pages/Recycling-Centers.aspx">recycling c​enters</a> can take unwanted light strings removed from decor, and our Batavia site accepts scrap floral wire.&#160;<br></p><h3> 
   ​Artificial Trees&#58;<br></h3><p>The benefit of artificial Christmas trees is that they can be stored and used for many years. The downside is that when they are retired,&#160;they can't be recycled because they are made from multiple materials (usually multiple types of plastic over a metal frame). Can&#160;an older artificial tree be reused in a different room or in the yard? Can it be used at the office? Can it be donated to a community organization,&#160;or sold/given away on local social media groups?&#160;If not, unwanted artificial trees should be put in regular trash - a bulk item sticker may be required.&#160;</p><p style="text-align&#58;left;">

   Christmas Trees as Backyard Habitat<br></h2><p>​​​​D​o you have a corner of your backyard where you could establish some shelter&#160;for overwintering birds and small critters? Do you have&#160;a pond where you could improve fish habitat? If so, an undecorated natural Christmas tree makes a great starting point.&#160;For smaller spaces, you may wish to cut a larger tree into several pieces and&#160;put part of the tree out as habitat and dispose of the rest a different way. Do check your municipality or township's&#160;ordinances for size limitations on compost and brush piles, but generally one tree should not be a problem. It's best to put the tree as far from possible from heated buildings (both yours and neighbors') to avoid attracting critters to the house​​. More tips are&#160;​available from

      <a href="https&#58;//www.geneva.il.us/1129/Christmas-Tree-Pickup"><strong>Geneva</strong></a> - LRS will pick up trees at no extra cost on&#160;residents' regular garbage collection day (Jan 6-7th &amp; Jan 12-13th). Residents&#160;must place their​&#160;tree at the curb no later than 7am on their scheduled day. Trees placed out&#160;after the second collection of January must have a trash sticker.<br></p><p></p><p><strong>Gilberts</strong> - The Village of Gilberts’ Waste Hauler (MDC) will pick up discarded Christmas trees place on the curbside on the resident’s normal pickup day after the holidays through the last collection in January.​</p><p>

      <description><![CDATA[<div><b>Page Content:</b> <h1>​​​​Landscape and&#160;Yard Waste<br></h1><p>​<br></p><h2>Landscape Waste Definitions and Regulations​<br></h2><p>The Illinois Environmental Protection Act prohibits the disposal of landscape waste in landfills.&#160;Instead, landscape waste is collected both by waste haulers and landscaping contractors and transferred&#160;to special facilities where it is ground into mulch or processed into compost. State&#160;law defines landscape waste as grass and woody&#160;trimmings, leaves, tree limbs, and other materials resulting from the care of lawns,&#160;shrubbery, vines and trees.&#160;<br></p><p>In practice, landscape waste is divided into two segments with somewhat different disposal options&#58; 
   <strong>yard waste</strong> and 
   <strong>brush</strong>.&#160;<br></p><p> 
   <strong>Yard waste</strong> includes grass clippings, weeds, leaves, pine needles,&#160;​plant stems, flowers and twigs and small&#160;branches (generally smaller than 3 inches&#160;in diameter).&#160;Yard waste does not include whole potted plants, clods of dirt, houseplants, straw bales, or sod.&#160;It is important to make sure that yard waste put out for composting is free from plastic pots, plant tags, plant stakes, wire plant cages, etc.<br></p><p style="text-align&#58;center;">

</p><h2>Yard Waste Disposal Options<br></h2><p> 
   <strong>​Curbside Collection&#58;&#160;</strong>Almost all municipal waste hauling agreements include a yard waste program. Generally speaking, these programs run from April to November, but residents should check with their hauler and/or municipality&#160;because some programs start in March and some extend into December (see links to the right)​. Most programs also include a special collection in January for 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/christmasTreeRecycling.aspx">live Christmas trees​</a>.<br></p><p> 
   <strong>​Packaging for Curbside&#160;Collection​&#58;&#160;</strong>All curbside programs allow residents to place yard waste in brown&#160;paper yard waste&#160;bags sold at ​grocery and hardware stores.&#160;​Items that can't practicably fit into bags, such as long sticks/branches or vines can be tied into bundles 
   <em>using biodegradable&#160;string or twine, </em> 
   <em>not wire</em>. Check with your hauler for exact&#160;bundle specifications, but generally they should be no longer than&#160;4 feet and no heavier than 50 pounds and should not include branches that are more than a couple of inches in thickness.&#160;Residents are often allowed to place yard waste out&#160;for collection in&#160;their own clearly labeled tote or container, provided that it is 33 gallons or less in size, has handles,&#160;and weighs less than 50 lbs.​ when full. Some municipal programs have&#160;65 or 95 gallon&#160;cart rental options for yard waste.&#160; Finally, some municipalities and townships conduct&#160;fall curbside leaf collection with​ a vacuum truck, so leaves can be raked to the curb loose. Check with your municipality for more details.<em> Yard waste should never be placed in plastic bags,&#160;mixed with trash or recycling, or swept into roadways​.&#160;</em></p><p> 
   <strong>Drop offs&#58;&#160;</strong>​See &#160;<a href="/Recycling/Pages/dropoffLocations.aspx#yardWaste">list here</a>.&#160;<br></p><p> 
   <strong>Burning&#58;&#160;</strong>Residents of municipalities should check their local ordinances. Burning of&#160;<em>dried out</em>​ landscape waste is allowable in unincorporated areas of certain rural zip codes only, and only under certain weather conditions. See&#160;<a href="https&#58;//www.kanehealth.com/Pages/Burning-Regulations.aspx">​Kane County's Burn Regulations</a> on the Health Department's website for details. Wet or damp landscape waste should not be burned due to excessive smoke production.<br></p><p> 
   <strong>Costs &amp; Cost Reduction&#58; </strong>Some municipal programs include the cost of yard waste collection in the base rate for trash. Others require that each bag, bundle or 35 gallon container have its own trash or special yard waste sticker. Costs at drop-offs are at the discretion of the operators​. Residents can save money on yard waste disposal by mulching leaves and grass clippings into their lawns, by using a small wood chipper to grind up small branches,&#160;and by 
   <a href="/Recycling/Pages/whyCompost.aspx">composting at home​</a>! If planting a new tree, consider something slow-growing and strong, like a native oak, which will produce a lot less litter than many fast-growing ornamentals, acorns not withstanding. Seedless varieties of notoriously messy trees like honey locust or Kentucky coffee tree may also be desirable. Pressed, dried leaves, twigs, acorns, and dried seed pods can make fun craft materials&#160;for kids and grown ups too (see &quot;Fun with Brush&quot; section below for some ideas).<br><br></p><h2>Brush Disposal Options<br></h2><p>
   <strong>Brush Collection&#58;</strong>&#160;Twigs and smaller branches, generally 3 inches in diameter or smaller, are usually included in curbside yard waste collection programs.&#160;Municipalities and townships often provide pick-up programs for larger pieces and quantities of woody debris. These services may be available on a seasonal schedule, upon request, or following destructive weather events. See the bottom set of links at right for more information. If there is no link for your place of residence and your trees have sustained storm damage,&#160;call your township or municipality to see if there are short-term&#160;debris services available.​​<br></p>​<strong>Professional Tree Services&#58;&#160;</strong>When a tree on private property is damaged by a storm, disease or age, it is a good idea to have a professional come out and assess its condition, especially if it is close to any roads or&#160;structures. Check to see if local tree professionals can provide&#160;chipping or hauling service to dispose of downed limbs. If scheduling a whole&#160;tree removal or substantial pruning, it is not a good idea to have disposal/chipping included in the service unless an alternate disposal plan is made.​<br><p></p><p> 
   <strong>Burning&#58;&#160;</strong>Residents of municipalities should check their local ordinances. Burning of
