To apply for a Special Use Permit, Variance, or Rezoning, please contact a Kane County Zoning Planner to assist you.
The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) makes recommendations to the County Board regarding zoning map amendments and special uses, as well as text amendments to the Kane County Zoning Ordinance. The ZBA also has the authority to grant variations to certain requirements such as lot sizes, frontage requirements and setbacks.
Building permits are required for all new construction, remodel, repair or demolition projects on properties in unincorporated Kane County.
To apply for a Building Permit, please fill out the 2026 BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION and then submit your application and any additional required documents via the electronic Kane County Web Portal.
Special accomodations may be made if a digital application cannot be submitted, please contact the Building Division if this applies to you.
To pay for a Building Permit, please use the County's electronic Paymentus Payment Portal. Payment is due after the permit is approved.

To schedule a Building Inspection, please call the inspection line at 630-232-5867. You will need the permit number and/or property address to schedule the inspection. Inspection requests typically require 48-72 hour notice.
Building inspections are performed Monday thru Friday and are given a morning or afternoon timeframe. If the inspection is not ready once the inspector arrives, a re-inspection fee of $100.00 may be charged and will need to be paid prior to scheduling the next inspection.
To report a Code Enforcement Concern, please fill out the Property Maintenance/Nuisance Complaint Form. Be sure to include the location of the property (address and PIN if possible) and a comprehensive description of the issue.
