Municipal Solid Waste Transfer Stations
Residents sometimes ask if there's a location they can drop off their trash or household recycling directly instead of having it collected. For residents of Kane County, this usually means making a trip to a transfer
station. Transfer stations are temporary waste storage facilities where material collected from homes and businesses is taken before being moved to landfills (trash) or recycling sortation facilities.
Some transfer stations are open to the public to drop off material. However, members of the public usually have to pay a tonnage fee at the same rate as commercial waste haulers and there is usually a one-ton minimum. Additionally, some transfer stations may require use of personal protective equipment such as hi-vis vests and hard-hats when unloading material. It is generally cheaper and more convenient for residents to dispose of trash (even bulky items), recycling and yard waste through curbside collection whenever possible.
