"Grace Period" Offered for Voter Registration

Kane County residents wanting to vote in the November 2nd General Election and who miss the Tuesday, October 5th deadline to register will have an extended grace period this year to register, provided they do it and vote at the same time in the Office of the Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham, according to County Director of Elections, Linda L. Mitchell.

The grace period for post-deadline registration, introduced in 2008, has been extended this year to include seven additional days, from the 27th day through the 7th day prior to the election, or, in the case of this years General Election, from Wednesday, October 6th through Tuesday, October 26th, said Mitchell.

But the grace period ONLY takes place here in our office at 719 South Batavia Avenue, in Geneva, said Mitchell.  The Clerks Office is located in Building B of the Kane County Government Center.

If you register to vote during the grace period, you must vote at the time of registration, said Mitchell.

In-person early voting for registered voters begins, Monday, October 11th and continues through Thursday, October 28th.  A complete list of early voting locations including the County Clerks Office, is available via the offices website site.

In addition to an array of federal, state, and county offices up for election on the November 2nd ballot, several government units located totally or partially in Kane County also feature referendums.  The list includes binding votes on bond sales and tax rate increases, as well as advisory referendums on pension reform, in four instances.   There are no statewide or countywide referendums on the ballot.  And none of the November 2nd contests involve municipal office, Mitchell noted.

Nearly 900 Kane County residents will have completed election judge training by mid-October, she said.  Without them, its all for naught, said Mitchell, who stressed the importance of well-trained and dedicated judges, adding that their election-day efforts countywide cannot be underestimated.
